Janet Fox Book Signing

Janet Fox Book Signing

Last Saturday, April 16th, I had the pleasure of attending a book signing with my friend, Janet Fox.  Her latest book, The Charmed Children of Rookskill Castle, is a middle grade novel. This is a marvelous story not only for children, but us older folks will love it as well.  It is somewhat scary but will appeal to most.  Set in the UK during the blitz of 1940 Kat and her siblings are sent to a school in Scotland to escape the dangers of the bombing in London. Kat realizes almost immediately that something is not quite right in the castle. Kat is a very practical girl and does not believe in ghosts. There must be a logical reason for the strange goings on in the castle!  Janet is working on a sequel and I for one cannot wait to read it.

The book signing was held in the Barnes and Noble store that I worked in for eight years. There have been times when I have wondered if it was the right thing to do when I resigned two years ago.  As I looked around the store I realized I did absolutely the right thing.  If I had not left, Lotus would never have been born. Only a handful of my co-workers remain there. I love doing what I’m doing now. There comes that time when change is the right thing to do.

Janet talked about her book being a “Big Magic” book. If you have not read Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Big Magic, I suggest you do. I feel that Lotus is a Big Magic book for me. I was compelled to write this story. Was God telling me to write it, I don’t know, but it is a story that had to be told. I didn’t put it in the Young Adult category because my protagonist, Chan-lei, is twenty years old but I believe that young adults should read it.  Chan-lei is innocent and trusting and she may have trusted the wrong people. There is a part where if she had made a different choice she would have been safe, at least for that night.

I have been asked why I chose a Chinese girl as my protagonist. In my next blog I will attempt to answer this question. I’m also working on a sequel to Lotus, but more about that later.

Keep reading and or writing……
